U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo. - The Air Force rifle team took part in a community service project to support the residents of Manitou Springs, Colo., recovery from fire and flood damage.
On Saturday, Sept. 20, during the day-long flood mitigation project of the area, the cadets assisted the Coalition for the Upper South Platte watershed, a non-profit, in spreading a mix grass and oat seed to help slow down the water in the event of flooding. The cadets also helped fix the mats used to prevent flash flooding.
The team led by C3C Mary Simonton from Cadet Squadron 23 and C2C Kevyn Stinett from squadron 37, volunteered for the assignment to work on the Waldo Canyon watershed.
"We believe it is also our job as cadet athletes to assist our community whenever we have the time," said Stinett. "We wanted to display our outreach as a student-athlete group, who is not mandated by coaches or other authority to perform service to our community."
"We are very proud of our team for recognizing the need to support our community," said Air Force head coach Launi Meili.
