OREM, Utah - Air Force Academy 125-pound junior Josh Martinez (Colorado Springs./Pine Creek HS) has been named the Western Wrestling Conference co-Wrestler of the Week after an outstanding performance on the mat last week. The conference award was announced Monday by the league.
Martinez led Air Force to a 3-0 dual record at the 25th annual Tracy Borah Duals, hosted by Western State Colorado University in Gunnison, Colorado, on Jan. 10. Martinez, who is ranked ninth in the nation at 125 pounds, earned Outstanding Wrestler honors by going undefeated (3-0) and not allowing a single point over three bouts. The junior opened the day with a 15-0 technical fall over Aaron Carrera of CSU-Pueblo and followed it up with a first-period fall (2:55) over Trenton Piatt of Western State in the second bout. Martinez capped the day with a 12-0 major decision over Christian Betancourt of Cal Baptist.
With the three victories, Martinez improves to 7-1 on the year. The conference honor is Martinez's first of the season and fourth of his career.
Martinez shared the weekly honors with Issac Andrade of South Dakota State.
The Western Wrestling Conference, which is in its ninth year of competition, is comprised of six schools including the Air Force Academy, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado, South Dakota State, Utah Valley and Wyoming.
