Falcons Conclude Thursday Night Throwdowns

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The Air Force boxing team closed out the Thursday Night Throwdowns portion of its season this evening (Jan. 15), with 12 hard-hitting bouts in the Academy's Cadet Gym Boxing Room. Following a competition that including a fairly young lineup, Phil Hendrix was voted as the team's Boxer of the Night.
Hendrix improved to 2-0 on the season with a 145-pound decision over defending NCBA champion Jacob Berggren.
Osama Farqaleet earned a decision over Nick Fernandez in the night's lightest bout (126 pounds), while Peter Coote and Jamal Johnson picked up 139-pound victories in back-to-back contests, as Coote defeated Gabriel Houston and Johnson decisioned Josh Key. Gustavo Tarango earned a 147-pound victory over Shane Garcia and Tim Smith picked up a 159-pound decision over John Fredericks.
The heavier weight classes included a 174-pound victory from Darnell Jones (decision over Jesse Calico) and a 175-pound win from Will McCollum (referee-stopped victory over Jesse Ott). Joe Asenuga decisioned Carson Orwig in a 188-pound match, while Scott Wawrzyniak (Sean Richards) and Yohance Salimu (Dan Neghina) earned the judges' vote in the 200-pound and heavyweight contests, respectively.
In the only women's bout of the night, Victoria Rodriguez decisioned Nikki Freeman at 164 pounds.
The Falcons return to action next week when they travel to Seattle for the two-day Main Event, which will be held at the Washington Athletic Club on Friday-Saturday, Jan. 23-24.
