
Alexa Chacon Finishes Eighth in Pentathlon

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Sophomore Alexa Chacon placed within the top half of the pentathlon field during the first day of action (Jan. 22) at the 25th Air Force Invitational. Competing in three events for the first time this season, Chacon finished eighth overall with 3,184 points.
Chacon opened the day with her highest event placement, as she finished fifth in the 60-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 8.94. She also finished within the top 10 on the high jump (5'2¼", ninth) and shot put (26'2¾", 10th), while just missing a top-10 mark in the long jump (16'6", 11th). Chacon overcame a hard collision on the turn of the 800-meter run and finished the day with a 13th-place time of 2:39.02.
Senior Evan McDowell and freshman Tyler Berson wrapped up the first four events of the men's heptathlon. With 2,704 points, McDowell is currently in fifth after the first day of competition, while Berson is in 14th with 2,391 points.
McDowell's day was highlighted by a first-place finish in the shot put, where he tossed a 43'6" to win the event by nearly four feet. He also earned a top-five finish in the long jump (season-best 21'0¾"), while tying for 10th in the high jump (5'10½") and 12th in the 60-meter dash (7.47).
In his first collegiate heptathlon, Berson picked up top-10 marks in the 60-meter dash (7.38, eighth) and long jump (career-best 20'6¼"), while adding a 12th-place finish in the high jump (5'8") and a 14th-place mark in the shot put (29'8¾").
McDowell and Berson conclude the heptathlon tomorrow (Jan. 23) morning, beginning at 9:00 a.m., while the rest of the Air Force squad opens action at the 25th Air Force Invitational at 1:00 p.m.
