Air Force rifle team takes two from UTEP

U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo. - The Air Force rifle team won two matches against the UTEP Miners this past weekend, Saturday, Nov. 21 and Sunday, Nov. 22, in El Paso, Texas. On Saturday, the Falcons won the match 4651-4581. On Sunday, they won 4673-4586; the two wins give Air Force a 6-4 record. Air Force is 9-2 against UTEP since 2006. Air Force is currently ranked sixth in the College Rifle Coaches Poll as of Nov. 23, and UTEP is now ranked No. 18.
In Saturday's match, David Higgins was the top individual with an aggregate 1166. Anna Weilbacher was the runner up with an aggregate 1162, and Ryan Jacobs finished the day with an 1161.
In the individual air rifle standings, Higgins was No. 1 with 589 points. He was the runner up in smallbore scoring a 577 and scored a perfect 200 in prone 1 and 2. In air rifle, his scores were 196, 196, and 197. Spencer Brandon, who was No. 1 in the smallbore standings, with a 579, finished the day with an 1160 aggregate. He also shot a 581 in air rifle. Weilbacher, No. 2 in air rifle (589) finished with a 573 in smallbore. Jacobs was the No. 3 shooter with 577 in smallbore and had a perfect 100 in prone 1. He had a 584 in air rifle with scores of 197, 190, and 197.
In official NCAA scoring, the smallbore squad of Spencer Cap (1160), Higgins, Jacobs, Tyler Rico (1159), and Weilbacher scored 2303 points, and scored a 2348 in air rifle (4651). The Miners finished 2272- 2309 (4581), respectively. Also shooting in Saturday's match was Mary Simonton who finished with a 554 smallbore and a 571 air rifle (1125).
In Sunday's match, Higgins came out ahead again as the top individual shooter with an aggregate 1174, Cap followed with an 1170, Weilbacher was third with an 1163 and Jacobs finished with 1161 points. Rico came in fifth with an 1159 aggregate.
Higgins was the No. 1 shooter in the smallbore standings with 583 points. Higgins showed his skills in prone by shooting another perfect 200. Cap and Brandon followed with 581 and 577 points, respectively. Weilbacher was the fifth highest scorer with a 575. In smallbore, Brandon had a perfect 200 in the prone positions and scored a 193, 192, and 195 in air rifle, while Cap scored a 100 in prone 1, and had a 198, 193, and 198 in air rifle.
In the air rifle standings, Rico was the top performer with a 593. Higgins finished with 591 points. Jacobs had the third highest finish with 590 points followed by Cap and Weilbacher who had 589 and 588 points, respectively.
In NCAA scoring, Cap, Higgins, Jacobs, Rico and Weilbacher scored with 2310 points in smallbore, they scored 2363 points in air rifle (4673). The Miners scored 2274-2312 (4586), respectively. Also in Sunday's match was Kevyn Stinett who shot a 561 smallbore and 581 in air rifle (1142), and Simonton with a 577 smallbore and 580 air rifle (1157).
The team's upcoming schedule includes hosting Ohio State on Dec. 3. The Winter Airgun Championships start Dec. 4-6 at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.
