ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Air Force baseball dropped a 10-6 ballgame at New Mexico in Mountain West action Friday night at Lobo Field. In a game moved to Albuquerque, the Falcons (0-5, 0-1 MW) played as the home team.
The series was originally slated to be played at the Academy, but unfavorable weekend weather conditions in Colorado forced the series to New Mexico.
A seven run first inning by the Lobos (4-1, 1-0 MW) proved too big a hurdle for AFA to overcome. The Falcons out-scored UNM 6-3 from that point on.
Starting pitcher Griffin Jax (0-2) settled down after the first inning, holding the Lobos to just one run over the next six innings. Jax pitched seven innings, allowing four earned runs in the loss. Freshman Ryan Holloway pitched the eighth and freshman Tucker Jacobs the ninth for the Falcons.
New Mexico starting pitcher Toller Boardman (2-0) worked 5.2 innings, allowing five runs in the win.
Air Force out-hit New Mexico 14-9. Four Falcons had multi-hit games, led by seniors Tyler Saleck and Noah Pierce. Saleck, the first baseman, went 3-for-4 with a run and RBI. Pierce, playing third, went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, a run scored and two RBIs. Junior rightfielder Spencer Draws went 3-for-4 and sophomore centerfielder Adam Groesbeck went 2-for-5 with two runs scored out of the leadoff slot.
Second baseman Sam Haggerty led the New Mexico offense, going 2-for-5 with a solo home run and two runs scored.
After UNM's top of the first, the Falcons began to chip away at the lead starting with two runs in the bottom of the first. Air Force scored runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to close the game to a 7-5 Lobo lead.
New Mexico scored one in the seventh and two in the eighth to pull away. The Falcons added a run in the ninth.
Game two of the series is tomorrow at noon.
