Nine Hard-Hitting Bouts Highlight Wing Open Quarterfinals

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The Air Force boxing team opened the 2015 Wing Open Tournament this evening (Feb. 5) with nine hard-hitting bouts in the Academy's Cadet Boxing Room. A total of 14 men and four women stepped into the ring to earn an advancing spot in the Falcons' annual tournament.
Sophomore Jordan Cox earned the first win of the night, claiming a split decision over classmate Jacob Hurst in a 139-pound quarterfinal bout. Fellow sophomore Tim Smith used two strong rounds to claim a unanimous decision over freshman Gustavo Tarango and advance to the next round at 147 pounds.
Six boxers took to the ring for a spot in the semifinals at 156 pounds. Sophomore Samuel Sheikh claimed the judges' unanimous decision in his bout with freshman D'Andre Fraser, while freshman Nick Schultz earned the decision in his contest with classmate Anthony Willis. Sophomore Johnny Wells forced three standing-eights in the opening round, en route to a referee-stopped victory over freshman John Fredericks.
Freshman Naji Bseiso unanimously defeated classmate Forrest Lang in the night's only 165-pound quarterfinal, while junior Carson Orwig earned a split decision victory over classmate Otto Sunday in the night's lone bout at 185 pounds.
The women competed in a pair of 150-pound preliminary bouts. Junior Sarenna Ortiz earned the first-ever tournament win for the women's club team, as she defeated senior Lillian Warner in a referee-stopped contest. After causing two standing-eight counts in the opening round, Ortiz forced another in the second, before the referee stopped the bout several seconds later. Freshman Meicie Bennett advanced in the tournament after earning a unanimous decision over classmate Joycelyn Fordyce.
The Wing Open tournament continues next Wednesday (Feb. 11) with the semifinal round at 4:00 p.m.
