Johnny Wells Earns Quarterfinal Win at Regional Meet

RENO, Nev. - Sophomore Johnny Wells claimed a 165-pound victory this evening (March 12), as three members of the Air Force boxing team opened competition at the National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) Western Regional Championships in Reno, Nev.
Wells earned a quick win in his first regional competition, as he forced the referee to halt his 165-pound bout with Nevada's Zack Shipton in the opening round.
Two other sophomores competed during tonight's quarterfinal round, but fell in their respective weight classes to opponents from Nevada. Brett Hagen dropped in his 147-pound bout to Zach Smith, while Sam Sheikh lost a controversial split decision to Johnny Aguilar at 156 pounds.
Air Force continues competition at the NCBA Western Regional Championships tomorrow (March 13) with the semifinal round of bouts. Action is slated to begin at 6:00 p.m. (PT) inside the El Dorado Hotel and Casino in Reno.
