USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force baseball continues its hot streak with a 12-1 win over UNLV in Mountain West action Friday afternoon at Falcon Field. The Falcons have now won four in a row and improved to 7-8, 4-3 MW.
Air Force got eight strong innings from starting pitcher Griffin Jax (1-3) and the offense racked up 16 hits, including home runs by Adam Groesbeck and Tyler Saleck.
Saleck, a senior first baseman, had a monster day at the plate, going 5-for-5 with a homer, three doubles, four runs and five RBIs. Designated hitter Bradley Haslam also continues to swing a hot bat, going 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Senior third baseman Noah Pierce added two hits and three runs. Sophomore leftfielder Tyler Jones had two hits, including a triple, and three runs scored. Freshman second baseman Tyler Zabojnik had a hit and two RBIs.
Jax worked eight innings, allowing one run off five base hit singles. The sophomore righthander struck out five to pick up his first win of the season. Sophomore Nathan Stanford closed out the game with a scoreless ninth.
Air Force knocked around UNLV (7-9, 1-6) starting pitcher D.J. Myers (2-2), who entered the game leading the conference with a 1.71 ERA. Myers allowed six runs off 10 hits in 6.1 innings of work. Catcher Erik VanMeetren led the Rebels at the plate, going 2-for-3.
The Falcons scored a run in the second and two in the third to go up 3-0 early. The Falcons plated two in the sixth and three in the seventh and four in the eighth. Groesbeck started the seventh off with a homer to right center. Saleck capped the eighth inning with a two-run shot over the right field fence.
Air Force also played its quickest game of the season, taking just one hour and 49 minutes to complete.
Game two of the series is tomorrow. First pitch is 1 pm.
