Falcons Split Second Night of Regional Tournament

RENO, Nev. - Backed by four semifinal victories, the Air Force boxing team split the second night of competition at the National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) Western Regional Championships in Reno on Friday, March 13. The men posted a 4-2 record on the night, while the women went 0-2 in their regional debut.
Junior Jamal Johnson and sophomore Landon Tomcho used impressive third-round comebacks to secure decisions in their first regional competition. Johnson advanced in the 132-pound bracket after earning the judges' vote in his bout with Washington's Hang Thao, while Tomcho earned the decision over California's Gerald Santos in his 139-pound semifinal bout.
Sophomore Adam Sumait kicked off the night with a 119-pound decision over Washington's Devin Bell, while senior Roy Taylor earned the decision over UNLV's Xavier Williams at 125 pounds.
Sophomore Johnny Wells and junior Chad Turney also competed in the semifinal round, but lost their respective bouts. Wells, the only member of tonight's lineup that competed in Thursday's quarterfinal round, lost a decision to Oregon State's Omar Murillo at 165 pounds, while Turney suffered a referee-stopped loss in his 185-poudn bout with Nevada's Garrett Felling.
The regional semifinals featured the first two women's bouts for the Academy at an NCBA event. Senior Hope Stremcha lost a referee-stopped contest to Washington's Kellsie Pence at 119 pounds, while sophomore Heather Parcasio lost her 125-pound bout with UNLV's Daryl Dawson when the referee halted the contest in the second round.
Air Force concludes competition at the NCBA Western Regional Championships tomorrow (March 14) night, when eight Falcons step into the ring at El Dorado Hotel and Casino for seven finals and one consolation bout.
