USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - After breaking his own Academy record and claiming the Mountain West title in the shot put last weekend, junior Grant Hamilton was named the Air Force co-Athlete of the Week on Monday, March 2. It is the second such award of the season for the Idabel, Okla., native.
Hamilton broke his own Air Force standard in the shot put, en route to his first conference title. The junior, who was the event leader after the opening round of throws (58'11½"), tossed a career-best 60'4" on his first attempt of the finals to break his own record by nearly a foot. With that throw, which bettered the overall field by nearly two feet, Hamilton became the first Air Force thrower to ever surpass the 60-foot line in indoor competition.
Hamilton, who shared the athletic department's March 2 honor with WAC swimming champion Michael Barnosky, was two conference champions for the Falcons at the Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships (Joey Uhle, pole vault) and one of four to break Academy records at the meet (Spencer Baldwin, weight throw; Hannah Everson, 3000-meter run and 5000-meter run; Carina Gillespie, mile).
The indoor season concludes over the March 13-14 weekend with the 2015 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., while the outdoor season kicks off for the Falcons on March 20-21 at the Jerry Quiller Classic in Boulder.
