USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - After breaking the 25-year-old Academy record in the 5000-meter run at the 106th Drake Relays last Thursday, junior Hannah Everson was named the Air Force Athlete of the Week on Monday, April 27. It is the second such award of the season for the Colorado Springs native.
In her first 5000-meter event of the outdoor season, Everson clocked a career-best time of 16:23.91 to take nearly four seconds off of an Academy standard that had stood since 1990 (Callie Calhoun's 16:27.31). Improving her own time in that event by over 30 seconds, Everson finished third in the 24-runner field -second amongst 22 collegiate runners - on the famed Blue Oval at Drake Stadium. The mark is also a new Junior Class Record for the program.
The 5000-meter outdoor record is the fourth Academy record of the year for Everson - three of which had previously stood for more than two decades. She reset program records in the 3000-meter (previous record from 2013) and 5000-meter (1991) events during the indoor season, before taking down the 10,000-meter run (1991) earlier this outdoor season.
Air Force returns to action on Saturday (May 2), when they travel to the Rock Chalk Classic in Kansas. Action is slated to begin on the field at 11:00 a.m., while the running events get underway at 1:30 p.m.
