
Duo Impacts 5K Standings at SFS Distance Carnival

SAN FRANCISCO - Sophomore Lindy Long and freshman Andrew Johnston impacted the Academy's 5000-meter records this evening (April 3), as nine members of the Air Force track and field team wrapped up competition at the SF State Distance Carnival in San Francisco.
Crossing the finish line in 17:19.39, Long recorded the ninth-fastest 5000-meter time in women's program history. With that time, a personal improvement of nearly 26 seconds, Long finished 13th in her heat of 38 and 29th in the full 123-runner event.
Winning his heat of the men's 5K with an outdoor debut of 14:22.70, Johnston shattered the program's Freshman Class Record. In addition to cutting 11 seconds off of an Academy standard that had stood for 23 years, Johnston finished 18th in the overall field of 176 runners.
Air Force claimed two additional top-30 finishes in the men's 5000-meter run, behind career-best performances by sophomores Jason Engel and Kyle Eller. Engel cut over 14 seconds off of his personal-best time (14:27.72) to finish fifth in Johnston's heat and 27th overall, while Eller improved his career time by nearly one minute (14:29.28) to finish 12th in his heat and 30th in the full field.
Junior Dan Caddigan made his outdoor debut this morning in the 10,000-meter run, clocking a time of 30:22.64 to finish seventh in opening heat and eighth in the full 88-runner field. The Falcons earned an additional top-30 finish in the 10K, as classmate Daniel Shellhouse used a career-best time of 31:04.51 to finish 30th in the overall field (17th in the his heat).
Freshman Carina Gillespie finished fourth out of 92 total runners in the 800-meter event, after clocking a time of 2:11.96 to earn the same placement in her heat. Fellow freshman Giulianna Vessa clocked a time of 4:38.83 to finish 23rd in the 122-runner 1500-meter race, while senior Rebecca Esselstein placed 39th with a time of 4:43.51.
Air Force travels to Palo Alto later tonight for distance events of the Stanford Invitational.
