
Air Force holds off Bellarmine, 11-8

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. -- Seven different Falcons scored goals to lead the Air Force to an 11-8 win over Bellarmine, in a non-conference college lacrosse game Saturday, April 4, at Carroll High School in Southlake, Texas. Air Force improved to 6-5 overall this season, the first time the Falcons have been above .500 this season. Bellarmine fell to 3-6 overall. Bellarmine and Air Force will both be members of the Southern Conference next season.
Christopher Allen, James Burke, Nate Hruby and Grant Gould all scored two goals each for the Falcons. Keith Dreyer, Nick Hruby and Barrett Anigan each scored a goal as the Falcons won their second straight game and fourth in the last five outings. Air Force is 6-2 in its last eight games with the only two losses coming by one goal each on the road.
Bellarmine opened the scoring at 14:10 of the first quarter when Austin Shanks scored his first of four goals on the afternoon. The Falcons then scored four straight as Burke, Gould, Allen and Dreyer all found the back of the net. The Falcons and Knights traded goals early in the second quarter and then Shanks and Macko each scored for Bellarmine as Air Force led 6-4 at the half.
Each team scored two goals early in the third as the Falcons held an 8-6 advantage. Falcon senior Nate Hruby scored two goals in the final 2:26 of the third quarter for a 10-6 lead. After a goal by Bellarmine's Daniel Zamora, his second of the game, Gould and Nick Hruby scored for an 11-7 lead. Shanks rounded out the scoring with 2:10 left in the game.
Bellarmine outshot Air Force, 34-30, in total shots. The Knights also won 29 ground balls while Air Force had 21. The faceoff battle was even as each team won 11. Junior goalie Doug Gouchoe made 12 saves for the Falcons as he earned his sixth win of the season.
Air Force returns to action on Saturday, April 11, against Mercer in Macon, Ga.
