SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Recording personal-best marks in his final three events, Air Force freshman Tyler Berson picked up a seventh-place finish in the decathlon at the Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Accumulating a two-day total of 6,118 points, Berson improved his career decathlon total by over 350 points.
Entering the day ranked eighth in the overall decathlon standings, Berson opened with eighth-place finishes in the 110-meter hurdles (16.53) and discus throw (95'4"). He used a six-inch improvement to his career clearance in the pole vault to finish fourth with a height of 13'3½", before adding seven feet to his all-time distance in the javelin (126'11", eighth). Despite a steady rain falling on the Aztec Sports Deck, Berson used a late kick down the final straightaway to take second in the 1500-meter run behind a career-best time of 4:40.31 (a 10-second PR).
The MW Outdoor Track and Field Championships begin in earnest tomorrow (May 14), as the remainder of the team begins competition. The hammer throw, which will be held on the campus of UC San Diego, is scheduled to start at 9:00 a.m., while events at the Aztec Sports Deck will begin at noon.
