EUGENE, Ore. – Three Air Force alumni wrapped up competition at the USATF National Championships in Eugene, Ore., this weekend. Academy graduates Paige Blackburn, Annette (Eichenberger) Melcher and Joey Uhle competed in two field events and one running event at Historic Hayward Field.
Blackburn posted the trio’s best finish of the weekend, tossing a 165’11” to place 14th in the javelin throw on Friday night. The 2012 graduate recorded throws of 156’11” and 162’6” during her first two throws of the meet, before releasing the 165’11” on her final attempt of the trial round.
Making her debut at the USATF Championships, Melcher clocked a time of 2:05.99 to finish seventh in her heat and 24th overall during the first-round of the 800-meter run on Thursday. Uhle, also making his first appearance at the USATF meet, was unable to clear the opening height of 17’8½” – a mark that would’ve been a season-best by three-and-a-half inches – and was one of six vaulters to go out at the first height on Saturday.
