HAMILTON, N.Y. - Air Force men's soccer dropped a 3-2 match at Colgate (3-1-1) in the CU Inaria Classic Friday night at Beyer-Small `76 Field. The loss dropped the Falcons to 2-3 on the season.
It was a tough loss for the Falcons, who rallied back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the match up with two second-half scores. The tie was short-lived as Colgate scored the game-winner in the 85th minute.
"We showed a lot of character coming back from two goals down," Air Force head coach Doug Hill said. "We played very well in the second half. It was unfortunate we dropped that game after totally dominating the second half."
Colgate jumped ahead early with a goal three minutes into the match. Troy Moo Penn scored the goal for the Raiders. Colgate led 2-0 at the half, with a goal in the 30th minute by Zach Tamen.
The Falcons made their move in the second half as junior Tucker Axhoj's scored in the 68th to make it a 2-1 match. Axhoj netted his team-leading third goal of the season, carrying the ball down the left side and beating the goalkeeper with a shot to the near post for the score.
Air Force tied the match up in the 77th on a goal by senior Ben Kern. Kern took a pass from sophomore Trey Pujats and struck the ball into the net for his first score of the season.
Unfortunately for the Falcons, Nick Rizzo scored at the 84:40 mark to lift Colgate to the win.
Air Force won the shots and corner kicks, holding a 10-9 advantage in shots and 3-2 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore John Wendt one save in goal for the Falcons.
"We need to shake this loss off quickly and get ready for another strong opponent in Cornell on Sunday," Hill said.
Air Force returns to action, Sunday, Sept. 20, at Cornell.
