Falcons Kick Off Air Force invitational

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. -- Junior Alexa Chacon finished sixth in the pentathlon, as five members of the track and field team kicked off the 26th-annual Air Force Invitational this afternoon (Jan. 21) at the Academy's Cadet Field House. In her first meet of the 2015-16 season, she tallied 3,191 points to finish within the top half of the pentathlon field.
Chacon opened the day with her best individual event finish, clocking 9.31 to place second in the 60-meter hurdles. Sixth-place finishes in the high jump (5'1") and long jump (16'6½") bookended a 10th-place spot in the shot put (27'11"). The junior capped the day with a fourth-place time of 2:32.23 in the 800-meter run.
On the men's side, sophomore Tyler Berson, classmate Calvin Berstler, freshman Sam Hinegardner and classmate Steven Moyer wrapped up the first four events of the heptathlon this afternoon. Berstler currently leads the quartet, as he is ranked third with 2,741 points. Hinegardner is listed seventh after four events with 2,460 points, while Berson and Moyer are in ninth (2,319) and 11th (2,223), respectively.
Berstler was the Falcons' top finisher in the first three events, placing second in the long jump (career-best 21'9"), third in the 60-meter dash (debut of 7.23) and seventh in the shot put (career-best 35'10¾"). He earned an additional seventh-place mark in the high jump after clearing a career-best height of 6'0¾".
Clearing 6'3¼" to finish fourth, Hinegardner was the Falcons' top finisher in the high jump. He also recorded a career-best distance of 20'2¼" to finish seventh in the long jump, while adding 11th-place marks in his collegiate debut of the 60-meter dash (7.60) and shot put (30'2").
With eighth-place finishes in both the 60-meter dash (7.44) and shot put (career-best 35'4"), Berson collected a pair of top-10 marks on the day. The sophomore, who finished 10th in last year's hepathlon, also finished 12th in the high jump (5'4½") and 13th in the long jump (season-best 19'3¼"). Moyer collected one top-10 finish, as he cleared 5'8" to take ninth in his first collegiate high jump event. He also placed 12th in the long jump (19'3½") and shot put (career-best 30'1½"), while finishing 13th in his 60-meter debut (7.68).
The quartet of Berson, Berstler, Hinegardner and Moyer conclude the heptathlon tomorrow (Jan. 22) morning, while the rest of the Air Force squad begins competition at noon.
