Falcons on the Road This Week...
Air Force continues conference action on the road against Grand Canyon University, Saturday, Oct. 8, at 7:00 p.m. PT. The match will be televised locally on CW6. The Series…
Saturday's match with Grand Canyon will mark the fifth meeting between the Falcons and the Lopes. Air Force leads the series, 2-1-1. In five matches the Falcons logged six goals while the Lopes have four. Air Force has beaten GCU twice at Cadet Soccer Stadium. GCU has won once and tied once on their home pitch at GCU Stadium.
In the first ever match between the programs, then-freshmen Cameron Duley logged a goal and an assist at Cadet Soccer Stadium. John Sims and Jaric Marton have a goal apiece against the Lopes while Tucker Bone logged an assist against them last season.
Air Force is Flying High…
In the wake of two conference road wins, Air Force flew up to 55 in the NCAA RPI rankings, an improvement of 24 spots as they look to keep themselves on the watch list for possible selection to the 2016 NCAA Tournament.
Air Force is playing amongst the nation's best as they are ranked second in the country in total goals and points. Florida Gulf Coast leads the nation with 31 goals and 88 points; just three and six more than Air Force, respectively. The Falcons are third in the nation in assists; trailing national leaders Denver and Maryland by two. The Birds are fourth in the nation in points per game and fifth in the nation in scoring offense. Air Force is eighth in the nation in assists per game and 15th in shots on goal per game.
The Falcons remain at No. 6 in the NSCAA NCAA Division I Men's Western region top 10 rankings. Air Force first broke into the polls at No. 7, in week three (Sept. 13). In September of 2015 the Falcons were ranked as high as No. 6. In 2014 they held the No. 1 spot in the western region for a week. For the first time this season, Air Force received votes in the College Soccer News Top 30 rankings.
Air Force is the Western Athletic Conference frontrunner in a myriad of categories to include; goals (28), goals per game (2.55), assists (26), assists per game (2.36), points (82), points per game (7.45), shots on goal per game (6.91) and the highest win-lost-tied percentage (0.727).
The Falcons displayed their ability to win road games with six goals over conference foes on the road, last weekend. The Falcons put up a two-goal shutout over Houston Baptist; a pitch they have had trouble winning on in the past. In the match against Incarnate Word, the Falcons logged four goals; their fourth four-goals plus performance this season.
Dewing is Doing the Job...
Sophomore forward Austin Dewing has soared to new heights following his third consecutive weekend of productivity for the Falcons. He logged his third two-goal match against Houston Baptist; helping the Falcons break a three-game winning drought on the Huskie's pitch and facilitating two conference wins on the road.
Dewing's three game winning goals rank him at 10th in the nation in game winners, while his five assists make him the conference frontrunner; a mark that also places him at 19th in the nation. The Colorado Springs native's 17 points, six goals, 0.45 assists per game, 0.55 goals per game and 1.55 points per game average places him atop all of the WAC footballers in those respective categories. He is ranked 16th and 28th in the nation in total points and total goals, respectively.
Dewing was tabbed with the WAC Offensive Player of the Week honor on Sept. 26, as he led the Falcons' charge scoring as many goals as Gonzaga had allowed in their previous two matches combined. He leads the Falcons in shots, assists, goals, game-winning goals and points.
Axhoj, Bone and Parker - A Force to be Reckoned With...
Tucker Axhoj, Tucker Bone and Klint Parker combine for 30 points, 10 goals, 10 assists and two game winners. The trio has taken 51 shots this season with 27 on goal.
Senior midfielder Axhoj leads the team in career assists and points with eight and 22, respectively. Sophomore defender Parker is second on the team in points and goals with 11 and four, respectively.
Sophomore midfielder Bone was announced to TopDrawerSoccer.com's Men's Team of the Week, Sept. 12-18, as he contributed assists in both of Air Force's wins against St. Mary's and San Francisco. The Granite Bay, Calif., native ranks fifth in conference with nine points.
Life Between the Pipes...
Sylvania, Ohio, native John Wendt is second in the conference with a .755 save percentage and third in the conference with 40 total saves. He is fifth in the conference in saves per game (4.44). Wendt ranks 43rd in the nation in saves and saves per game.
Senior goalkeeper Jake Schenk is undefeated in the box. He's logged two shutouts and has only allowed two goals in 225 minutes between the pipes. Schenk was dubbed the WAC's Defensive Player of the Week, Sept. 12. The Flemington, N.J., native has logged six saves hand has a .750 save percentage.
Last Weekend…
Air Force opened the Western Athletic Conference slate with two wins on the road. On Friday, Sept. 20, the Falcons logged a 2-0 shutout against Houston Baptist, in Houston Tex. On Sunday, Oct. 2, Air Force logged their fourth four-plus goals game against Incarnate Word in a 4-2 win in San Antonio, Tex.
