Air Force Claims Five Victories at Nevada

RENO, Nev. – Backed by an impressive 3-1 record from its freshmen contenders, the Air Force boxing team posted a 5-3 record during a National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) Showcase in Reno, Nevada, on Friday, Nov. 11.
"I'm really proud of the young guys and the way they boxed tonight," head coach Blake Baldi said.
Freshman Levi Rate put the youngest class of boxers in the win column, as he forced the referee to stop his 140-pound bout with Nevada's Dillon Maguin in the third round. Classmate Devon Smith decisioned the Wolf Pack's Nate Struthers at 160 pounds, while fellow freshman Vladyslav Zhukov earned the judges' decision in his 180-pound bout with Nevada's Kennan O'Neill.
Two veteran boxers also collected first-place finishes at the NCBA Showcase, as junior Osama Farqaleet earned a 135-pound decision over California's Eric Pan and senior Landon Tomcho defeated Nevada's Britt Brown when the referee stopped their 153-pound bout in the second round.
Sophomore Den Tati-Mackaya received the team's Boxer of the Week award following a narrow 2-1 loss to Nevada's Garrett Felling – the three-time defending national champion at 195 pounds. Sophomore Vibron Frial and freshman Patrick Connell also competed on Friday, falling to a pair of Nevada boxers. Frial lost a 132-pound decision to Dustin Congdon, while Connell lost to Nestor Ortiz at 145 pounds.
