USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force women's basketball dropped a 66-54 contest to Wyoming (9-3, 1-0) in its Mountain West-opener Thursday night at Clune Arena. Cortney Porter scored a season-high 24 points to pace the Falcons.
In a game that was much closer than the final score indicated, Air Force trailed by just two points with 5:23 left to go in the fourth quarter. Wyoming was able to close out the game by scoring 21 points-to Air Force's 11-in the remaining five minutes and change.
Porter scored the most points by a Falcon so far this season, connecting on 10-of-18 from the field. The junior added four rebounds and three steals. Freshman Kassady Huffman added 13 points and three blocked shots. Junior Dee Bennett grabbed 13 rebounds to go with two blocks. Sophomore Venessannah Itugbu had a career-high four assists.
"I thought Cortney played well today," Air Force head coach Chris Gobrecht said. "Dee rebounded very well for us and our freshmen, especially Kassady, had solid production for us."
Marta Gomez scored 17 points to lead Wyoming, which had three players in double-figures scoring. Liv Roberts added 14 and Hailey Ligocki scored 10. Natalie Baker had 11 rebounds for the Cowgirls.
Air Force opened the game on a 9-0 burst and went on to lead 14-8 after the first quarter of play. The Falcons kept it close at the half, trailing by just two at 24-22. The Falcons had a sluggish third quarter, allowing Wyoming to take the lead with a 9-0 run after re-tying the game early in the quarter. The Falcons rebounded with 19 points in the fourth quarter.
"I thought we defended really well today," Gobrecht said. "Unfortunately, when we didn't defend, Wyoming made us pay and that's what good teams do. We also began to run out of steam and got into some foul trouble late. I thought we played a good game. I think with the effort we saw after the winter break, we can play even better as we continue to improve."
Air Force returns to action Saturday, Dec. 31, at Utah State. Tip-time at Dee Glen Smith Spectrum, is 2 pm MT.
