
Air Force Defeats Utah Valley, 64-53

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force women's basketball defeated Utah Valley, 64-53, in the consolation game of the 2016 Air Force Classic Saturday afternoon at Clune Arena. Vanderbilt (7-1) held off SIUE (2-5), 73-63, to win the championship in the second game.
Air Force's trio freshmen Kailin Davis and Mariah Forde and junior Cortney Porter combined for 57 points for the Falcons, who improved to 2-6 on the season. Forde and Davis had career-high's with 23 and 20 points respectively. Porter scored 14 and had a season-high eight assists. Davis earned all-tournament honors after scoring 37 points on the weekend.
"Kailin Davis was incredible for us in the first half and Mariah Forde was incredible for us in the second," Air Force head coach Chris Gobrecht said. "I thought our guard play was really good today between Kailin, Mariah and Cortney Porter."
Forde hit five three's for the Falcons and Davis made four. Air Force out-rebounded Utah Valley (1-8) 37-32 with freshman Kassady Huffman getting eight rebounds and three blocks and junior forward Dee Bennett grabbing seven boards.
Air Force played solid defense on the night, holding the Wolverines to 31 percent shooting from the field. Taylor Gordon led UVU with 15 points.
"I thought we did a good job of defending intelligently," Gobrecht said. "It's nice to be able to throw the arms up after the third verse."
The Falcons, who led wire-to-wire, started the game hot, scoring the first nine points. Air Force led 18-13 after the first quarter and 32-28 at halftime.
Utah Valley kept the game close, getting to within four points of the Falcons with a minute to play in the third quarter. Air Force went on another 9-0 run over the next three minutes to go up 13 at 49-36. The Falcons remained ahead the rest of the way for the win.
The Falcons shot a season-best 44.7 percent from the field and had a season-high nine three-point baskets.
Air Force returns to action next weekend, Dec. 10, hosting Northern Colorado. Tip-time is slated for 2:30 pm after the conclusion of the Air Force men's noon basketball game vs. Denver.
