Series vs. Denver
Air Force and Denver have played 74 times and the Pioneers hold a 52-22 lead in the series that began in 1967. Denver has won six straight in series dating back to a 10-7 Air Force win in Denver in 2009. The teams played last season in Denver and Pioneers, ranked No. 1 in the nation, beat the Falcons, 16-6.
Last Season vs. Denver
Connor Cannizzaro scored six goals and had two assists to lead No. 1 Denver to a 16-6 win over Air Force in 2015. Denver scored the first three goals of the game in the first three minutes as Wesley Berg, Cannizzaro and Bryce Parietti all scored. Air Force cut the Pioneer lead to 3-2 on goals by Christopher Allen and James Burke. Goals by Cannizzaro and Erik Adamson gave DU a 5-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. Allen, Chris Walsch and Nick Hruby all scored for Air Force in the second quarter, but the Pioneers took a 10-5 lead into the half. Cannizzaro scored twice and Adamson scored once in the third as Denver built a 13-5 lead. After a goal by Walsch, his second of the game, DU scored the final three goals as Brendan Bomberry, Colin Woolford and Jake Woodring made up the final score of 16-6. Denver outshot Air Force, 41-23 in total shot attempts. The Pioneers also had a 31-14 advantage in ground balls and won 17 of the 22 faceoffs in the game. Doug Gouchoe made seven saves in 57 minutes for the Falcons. Mitch Rose played the final two minutes in goal for the Falcons.
Scouting the Pioneers
Denver is ranked second in the nation in the Cascade/Maverik Preseason Media Poll. The Pioneers, the NCAA defending champions, is coached by 2015 USILA Head Coach of the Year Bill Tierney. Denver returns three of its top four point getters from a 2015 team that finished the campaign on a 13-game winning streak en-route to a National Championship. Junior Connor Cannizzaro shattered Denver's single-season points record in his first season with the program, finishing with 90 points on 57 goals and 33 assists. Classmates Zach Miller and Tyler Pace return in the Denver midfield after finishing with 61 (26G, 35A) and 49 (22G, 27A) points, respectively in 2015.
Last Week vs. Navy
Navy, ranked 18th in the nation, out-scored Air Force, 8-1, in the second half for a come-from-behind 10-6 win over the Falcons in a non-conference college lacrosse game Saturday, Feb. 6, in Annapolis, Md. The game was the season opener for both teams.
Air Force, 0-1 overall, scored the first three goals of the game and had a 5-2 lead at the half. However, Navy scored four goals in each the third and fourth quarters for the win.
