BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Air Force senior Patrick Corona clocked a time of 8:03.12 to finish ninth in the 3000-meter run, as the 2016 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships wrapped up this evening (March 12) at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Alabama.
Corona made his way to the front of the 3000-meter championship race soon after the gun. With no one willing to break away, the bunched pack of competitors opened the race at a slow pace. The field began to spread out slightly at the four-minute mark, and the Falcons' senior remained in second through 1600 meters. As the runners jostled for position with four laps to go, Corona fell back in the pack, but pulled moved up to fourth at the start of the bell lap. The middle of the pack that was chasing eventual champion Edward Cheserek of Oregon reorganized itself once again during a sprint in the final 50 meters and, with just 0.88 seconds separating the No. 4 and No. 9 runners, Corona crossed the finish line in a time of 8:03.12 to finish ninth.
With the indoor season complete, the Falcons head outdoors for the second half of the 2016 campaign. Air Force will travel to Boulder, Colo., on Friday-Saturday (March 18-19) for the annual Jerry Quiller Classic.
