Falcons Open Outdoor Season at Aztec Invitational

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Backed by three top-five finishes, the Air Force track and field team wrapped up the first day of the outdoor season this evening (March 25) at the Aztec Invitational in San Diego. Senior Anna Olesinski claimed an event title for the Falcons, as she won the open section of the 3000-meter run with a career-best time of 10:14.47.
Sophomore Brooks Hardy and freshman Luke Piper paced the men to four top-10 finishes in the two throwing events that were contested today. Hardy registered a career-best toss of 166'2" to finish fifth in the invitational section of the hammer throw, while Piper used a collegiate debut of 164'6" to place third in the open section of the javelin. Junior Darby Maier and sophomore Calvin Berstler earned additional top-10 finishes in those events, as Maier threw a 153'6" to finish seventh in the hammer and Berstler tossed a career-best 141'5" to finish 10th in the javelin.
Sophomore Conner Wilburn paced a trio of men that competed in the Distance Carnival at the SDSU Sports Deck, as he finished sixth in the 5000-meter run with an event debut time of 15:12.32. Classmate Jimmy Shipley added 16th-place time of 15:30.70 in that event, while freshman Parker Seale finished 24th out of 90 competitors during his debut in the 1500-meter run (4:06.12).
Olesinski was one of two members of the women's team to earn top-10 finishes during tonight's Distance Carnival, as freshman Jaci Smith placed ninth in the 5000-meter run after crossing the finish line in a time of 17:43.13. Fellow freshman Shanna Burns added a 1500-meter time of 4:48.44 to finish 13th out of 74 runners in her collegiate debut at that distance.
The Falcons return to the SDSU Sports Deck tomorrow (March 26) morning for the final day of competition at the Aztec Invitational. Action gets underway at 10:00 a.m., with the women's discus throw and men's 4x400-meter relay.
