USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force baseball posted a 5-2 win over Nevada in Mountain West action Friday afternoon at Falcon Field. The Falcons improved to 6-2, 1-0 MW in a quick game that was completed in under two hours.
Junior righthanders Griffin Jax (2-1) and Austin McDaniel combined to hold the defending MW Champions to just six hits in a game that lasted one hour and 56 minutes. Jax pitched seven innings, allowing two runs, while striking out three for the win. McDaniel picked up his first-career save with two innings pitched. McDaniel faced just six batters to get his six outs.
The Falcons beat Christian Stolo (1-2), the reigning conference pitcher of the year. Stolo, a lefthander, worked all eight innings for the Wolf Pack (4-6, 0-1 MW), allowing five runs off seven hits.
Sophomore shortstop Tyler Zabojnik went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Zabojnik was also clutch defensively, turning a pair of double plays to go with five assists. Junior third baseman Bradley Haslam went 2-for-4 with a run and RBI.
Air Force jumped on Stolo immediately with three runs in the first inning. Haslam doubled to the right field corner to score leadoff hitter Adam Groesbeck for the first run. Rightfielder Spencer Draws scored the second run on a ground out by designated hitter Nic Ready and Haslam scored on an RBI-single by Zabojnik.
The Falcons tacked on a fourth run in the fourth as Zabojnik scored on a wild pitch after reaching base earlier with a double.
Nevada plated its two runs in the sixth inning. The Falcons responded with a run in the bottom of the inning. Catcher Travis Wilkie doubled down the left field line to score Zabojnik.
