Alexa Chacon, Calvin Berstler Impact Academy Standings

AZUSA, Calif. – Junior Alexa Chacon and sophomore Calvin Berstler impacted the Academy's all-time standings in the heptathlon and decathlon, respectively, this afternoon (April 14), as four members of the Air Force track and field team wrapped up competition at the California Invitational at Azusa Pacific.

Highlighted by an Academy Heptathlon record at 800 meters, Chacon registered 4529 points to debut in fifth on the Academy's all-time list. In her first collegiate heptathlon, the junior set an event record in the 800-meter run after clocking a career-best time of 2:20.50. In addition to finishing 14th in the overall field of 48, Chacon carved more than two seconds from the previous standard that had stood for nine years. A career-best distance of 16'3" in the long jump and a throw of 88'1" in the javelin contributed to Chacon's final event total, as she became the first in three years to impact the program's top 10.

Berstler debuted in 10th on the Academy's all-time decathlon standings after finishing third with a career-best total of 6617 points. The sophomore, who bettered his total at last year's meet by more than 1400 points, recorded personal-best marks in four of the final five events. He was the Falcons' top finisher in the 110-meter hurdles (15.53), discus throw (107'0") and javelin throw (144'3"), while also posting a career-best time of 4:43.67 in the 1500-meter run. Berstler, who rounded out his scoring with a 12'7½" clearance in the pole vault, accounted for the Falcons' best decathlon finish at the California Invitational in five years.

Sophomore Tyler Berson and freshman Sam Hinegardner also competed in the decathlon today, finishing 10th (6006) and 14th (5600), respectively. Berson, who opened the day with a 16.51 in the 110-meter hurdles, competed in the discus throw (100'7"), pole vault (13'11¼") and javelin throw (119'9"), before concluding the competition with a 4:42.19 in the 1500-meter run. In his first collegiate decathlon, Hinegardner was the trio's top finisher in the pole vault (career-best 14'3¼") and 1500-meter run (4:42.07), while also competing in the 110-meter hurdles (18.43), discus (79'6") and javelin (117'0").

In addition, two members of the Falcons' distance team kicked off action at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays this evening. Sophomore Andrew Milliron finished 25th in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:18.16, while senior Sean Bapty clocked a career-best time of 9:21.76 to finish 27th.

The Air Force distance squad wraps up its California road trip tomorrow (April 15) with races at the Beach Invitational in Long Beach and at the Mt. SAC Relays in Cerritos.
