DES MOINES, Iowa – The Air Force track and field team wrapped up the second-day of competition at the 107th Drake Relays this evening (April 29), with one Academy record, two event titles and four total improvements to the program's all-time standings.
Junior Zach Johnson, senior Gavin McHenry, sophomore Robbie Anderson and classmate Jamiel Trimble broke the Academy's 19-year-old record in the 4x200-meter relay, as they combined for a winning time of 1:23.29. Finishing first in the 11-team final, the Falcons deleted more than a half second from the program record that had stood since 1997.
The 4x200-meter quartet was one of two relays to impact the Academy record book under the lights at Drake Stadium. The 4x800-meter squad of senior Grant Caswell, sophomore Zac Petrie, freshman Nic Cheuvront and junior Matt Dorsey clocked the second-fastest time in Academy history (7:29.14) to finish third out of 15 teams in the night's final event.
Anchoring the Falcons' record-setting 4x200-meter relay team concluded a stellar day of action on the Blue Oval for Trimble, as he impacted the top-five of the Academy's all-time standings in two individual events.
In the first wind-legal 100-meter dash of his career – and just the second overall at that distance, Trimble equaled the second-fastest time in Academy history. Clocking a time of 10.46 to finish sixth in the preliminary round, Trimble matched the program's Sophomore Class Record that Travis Picou initially set in 2006. That race came three hours after he posted the Academy's fourth-fastest time in the 110-meter hurdles. Finishing sixth in the preliminary round with a time of 14.04, Trimble improved his own Sophomore Class Record by 0.06 seconds and tied Tom Clark's time from 2003.
The Falcons earned an event title in the field from senior Dylan Bell, who cleared 17'8½" to win the pole vault. Junior Kyle Pater added a 15th-place finish in that event (16'4¾"), while sophomore Shelley Spires matched her season-high clearance of 5'8" to place fifth in the high jump.
Air Force accounted for four top-15 finishes in the throwing events. Junior Taylor Hulslander and sophomore Donny Crabill finished 12th (191'9") and 13th (191'6"), respectively, in the javelin throw, while senior Grant Hamilton finished 14th in the shot put (55'2") and junior Cydnee Reese earned the same placement in the discus throw (152'7").
The Falcons conclude action at the Drake Relays tomorrow (April 30) in Des Moines. In addition, several younger members of the squad compete at the Steve Scott Invitational at UC Irvine.
