Air Force split a pair of home matches Sunday afternoon at the Air Force Academy. The Falcons dropped a conference match to Utah State, 6-1, while beating CSU-Pueblo, 7-0.
For the second straight conference match, the Falcons opened up against Utah State by winning the doubles point and losing all six singles. Jack McCullers and Tadhg Collins beat Luis Lopez and Romai Ugarte, 6-2, at No. 1 doubles while Lucas Fumagalli and Luke Sanderson beat Jack Swindells and Jonas Maier, 6-2, at No. 2. The No. 3 doubles didn't finish since the point was clinched. The Aggies swept the singles matches, picking up wins at No. 1-3 and No. 6 to clinch the match.
The Falcons ended the weekend by beating CSU-Pueblo, 7-0. The Falcons won all three doubles matches to secure the point. Fumagalli and Sanderson were 6-4 winners at No. 1, while Max Olson and Dillon Launius won 6-0 at No. 2. McCullers and Austin Gula picked up the win, 6-2, at No. 3.
Fumagalli won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles while Isaac Perez won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3. Sanderson won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 and Collins was a 6-2, 6-0 winner at No. 5. Nicholas Carpenter won, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6. Olson rallied after losing the first set to pick up the win at No. 1, 6-7, 6-1, 1-0.
"We played a great match against Utah State, probably our best all year, but were not able to come up with the win," Air Force head coach Dan Oosterhous said. "Our doubles team are playing very solid right now and we have lots of confidence against anyone we play. These close losses really hurt, but our guys are resilient and we are still getting better in each match. I was happy to see us recovery so quickly and play very focused against CSU-Pueblo. We really enjoyed playing by the women's team in front of a great home crowd."
Air Force is 5-15 overall this season and 0-3 in conference play. The Falcons play two conference road matches next weekend before returning home April 15 against Fresno State and April 17 vs. Nevada to close out the regular season.
