Falcons Drop A Pair To Fresno State

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Air Force baseball dropped both games of a doubleheader to Fresno State, in Mountain West action Saturday at Suplizio Field. The Falcons lost game one, 11-6, and game two, 5-1.
The games were played in Grand Junction due to unplayable conditions at Falcon Field at the Academy due to snowfall.
In game one, Fresno State (28-16, 16-7 MW) broke up a 6-6 tie with a four-run seventh inning. The Bulldogs had 18 hits in the game.
Air Force (20-19, 9-12 MW) had eight hits, with third baseman Bradley Haslam going 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs. Left fielder Tyler Jones added two hits and first baseman Russell Williams hit a home run.
Reliever Matt Hargreaves (1-2) took the loss. Starting pitcher Griffin Jax pitched five innings, striking out four. Lance Fry and Steven Plaskett also pitched in relief.
Ricky Tyler Thomas (7-3) pitched six innings in the start and win for Fresno State. Time Borst pitched three scoreless innings for the save.
Third baseman Jesse Medrano went 4-for-5 at the plate and three other players had three hits for the Bulldogs.
Fresno State scored runs in the second and third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth to go up 5-1.
Air Force scored a run in the third and four in the fifth to tie it up. After a Fresno State run in the top of the sixth, Williams hit the solo home run in the bottom of the inning to tie it up.
Fresno State scored four runs in the seventh to pull ahead 10-6. The Bulldogs tacked on an insurance run in the ninth.
In game two, a four-run sixth inning by Fresno State broke open what at that point had been a scoreless pitchers duel.
Falcon starting pitcher Jacob DeVries (4-5) held the Bulldogs scoreless in the first five innings, but ran into trouble in the sixth. DeVries did strike out a season-high eight batters in 5.1 innings worked. Nick Biancalana relieved DeVries and allowed just one run over the final 3.2 innings.
The Falcons plated its lone run in the sixth on a solo home run by Haslam. The Falcons had six hits in the game, with Jones collecting two hits, including a double off the 410-foot sign in left-center.
Jimmy Lambert (9-0) pitched six innings and remains unbeaten on the season in the win for Fresno State. Dylan Lee pitched three scoreless innings for the save.
Fresno State had five hits. Right fielder Austin Guibor went 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs.
The series finale is tomorrow, back at Suplizio Field. First pitch is 11 a.m.
