Air Force Trio Opens Competition at MW Championships

CLOVIS, Calif. – Three members of the Air Force track and field team kicked off the 2016 Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships this evening (May 11), when sophomores Tyler Berson and Calvin Berstler competed in the first five events of the decathlon and junior Alexa Chacon took part in the first four events of the heptathlon.
Just one point separates Berson and Berstler in the decathlon, as the pair stands at ninth (3232) and 10th (3231), respectively, after the first five events. Berson bookended his day with fourth-place finishes in the 100-meter dash (career-best 11.26) and 400-meter dash (season-best 50.33), while finishing ninth in the shot put (season-best 34'6¼"), 10th in the long jump (19'6¼") and 11th in the high jump (5'6½"). Berstler's best finish came in the 100-meter dash, where he finished sixth with a time of 11.29. He tied for seventh in the high jump (5'11¼") and finished eighth in both the long jump (20'9¾") and shot put (37'1¾"), while ending his day with an 11th-place time of 55.68 in the 400-meter dash.
With 2759 points, Chacon is in 13th after the four events of the heptathlon. Her best finish of the day came during the opening event, as she clocked a time of 14.72 – a mark just shy of her season best – to finish seventh in the overall standings. She added a 12th-place clearance of 4'11¾" in the high jump, while closing out the day with 14th-place scores in the shot put (career-best 31'2½") and 200-meter dash (26.68).
Berstler, Berson and Chacon return to Veterans Memorial Stadium tomorrow (May 12) for the final events of their respective events. In addition to the conclusion of the decathlon and heptathlon, which begin at 4:00 p.m. (PT), the finals of the 10,000-meter run will take place at 8:15 p.m.
