Air Force Falls Sunday at San Diego State

Air Force baseball dropped an 11-5 contest at San Diego State in Mountain West action Sunday afternoon at Tony Gwynn Stadium in San Diego, Calif. The Falcons dropped to 27-23, 11-16 MW.
San Diego State (17-34, 9-18 MW) scored four runs in the second inning to take a 6-2 lead. The Aztecs held off the Falcons the rest of the way to take the series.
Air Force had nine hits on the day. Center fielder Adam Groesbeck, shortstop Tyler Zabojnik and first baseman Russell Williams had two hits each. Zabojnik hit his 22nd and 23rd doubles of the season, moving into third place all time in a season at Air Force. Left fielder Tyler Jones and second baseman Shaun Mize added two RBIs.
Falcon starting pitcher Nick Biancalana (3-3) pitched just 1.1 innings in the loss. Freshman Matt Hargreaves relieved Biancalana and worked 3.2 innings, striking out four and allowing just one unearned run. Tyler Mortenson, Ryan Holloway, Tucker Jacobs and Jake Gilbert closed out the game in relief. Jacobs returned to action after missing a significant portion of the season due to injury.
San Diego State had 14 hits on the day. Shortstop Alan Trejo went 3-for-5 with two runs and designated hitter Spencer Thornton went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs. Aztec starting pitcher Cody Thompson (3-7) pitched five innings for the win.
San Diego State plated two runs in the first to go ahead early. The Falcons scored two runs in the top of the second to tie the game up. The Aztecs scored the four runs in the bottom of the inning to go back ahead.
After the teams traded runs in the third, the Falcons plated another run in the fourth to pull to within three at 7-4. After SDSU added a run in the sixth, the two teams traded runs in the seventh. San Diego State scored two runs in the eighth.
Air Force returns home to close out the regular season with a three-game home series hosting New Mexico, Thurs.-Sat., May 19-21.
