Air Force Drops Regular Season Finale To New Mexico

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force baseball capped the 2016 regular season with a 11-2 loss to New Mexico Saturday afternoon at Falcon Field. The Falcons are 28-25 overall and finish Mountain West play with an 12-18 mark.
New Mexico (35-21, 20-10 MW) jumped ahead 11-0 before the Falcons plated two runs in the sixth inning. The Lobos had 13 hits and three home runs on the day. Leadoff hitter Luis Gonzalez went 3-for-5 with a home run and five RBIs. Third baseman Carl Stajduhar and first baseman Jack Zoellner also homered for the Lobos.
Air Force had eight hits on the day. Tyler Jones smacked his 18th home run of the season for the Falcons' first run. Second baseman Shaun Mize added two hits, including an RBI double.
Sophomore Nick Biancalana (3-4) took the loss. Biancalana pitched 3.1 innings in the start, striking out three. Tyler Mortenson, Ryan Holloway and Matt Hargreaves closed out the game in relief.
New Mexico starting pitcher Carson Schneider (7-3) pitched six innings for the win. Alex Estrella closed out the last three innings in relief to pick up the save.
The Lobos scored runs in the first and second innings and three in the third to jump ahead 5-0. New Mexico played three runs in the fourth and sixth innings as well.
It was the final home game for senior right fielder Spencer Draws. Draws went 1-for-4, hitting a double off the left field fence in his final at bat. Air Force's other graduating senior is pitcher Trent Monaghan.
Air Force returns to action at the 2016 Mountain West Baseball Championship, held May 25-29, in Albuquerque, N.M. The Falcons, playing as the five-seed, take on four-seed UNLV on Wednesday, May 25. The game is slated for 3 pm MT.
Bird Bites: Air Force set school MW season hitting records for team batting average (.314), hits (332), doubles (73), RBIs (164) and tied the school records for assists (366) and fielding percentage (.966)...the Falcons set a MW season record in pitching with 193 strikeouts...Individual school MW records set: Bradley Haslam for average (.419), at bats (129) and hits (54)...Tyler Zabojnik with 14 doubles...Tyler Jones with nine home runs and 34 RBIs.
