Highlighted by junior Griffin Jax earning Mountain West co-Pitcher Of The Year honors, Air Force baseball piled up four all-conference honors, including co-Freshman Of The Year honors by Nic Ready. The Falcons placed three players on the first team for the first time ever.
The four all-conference players ties the school record set in 1991. Jax, third baseman/designated hitter Bradley Haslam and left fielder Tyler Jones were named to the MW First Team, while Ready earned second team honors.
Jax, a righthander, shared POY honors with Jimmy Lambert of Fresno State. He is the first Air Force player ever to earn a player/pitcher of the year honor. The in-state product from Greenwood Village, Colo., enters the Mountain West Championship leading the conference with a 1.74 ERA and 98.1 innings pitched. Jax is second in wins with a 9-2 record and is also second with 85 strikeouts.
Jax earned Mountain West Pitcher of the Week three times this season and currently has a streak of 23 consecutive innings pitched without allowing an earned run. That is not his longest streak this season, as he also had a 24.1 inning streak without allowing an earned run earlier this season. Jax's nine wins is currently the second-most in school history and his 1.74 ERA is below the school record of 2.15 set by Tom Grinstead in 1979.
Freshman designated hitter/third baseman Nic Ready shared co-Freshman of the Year honors with third baseman Kyle Isbel of UNLV. Ready, a native of Dallas, Texas, is batting .327 with five home runs and 46 RBIs entering the championship. His 71 hits on the season is the second-most ever by an Air Force freshman. Ready batted .336 in MW play and was third on the team with three homers and 23 RBIs.
Jones earned his second all-MW honors and his first, first-team accolade. The Coppell, Texas, native currently leads the Mountain West with 18 home runs and 62 RBIs. The junior ranks in the Air Force season top 10 in both categories, ranking fourth in home runs and seventh in RBIs.
Haslam enters the tournament with a conference-leading .408 batting average to go with 89 hits. The San Marino, Calif., native finished second with a .419 average in MW play which is a new Air Force record. The junior enters championship play needing two hits to tie the school record of 91 set by Mike Thiessen in 2000.
Air Force baseball enters the Mountain West Championship with a 28-25 record. The 28 wins are the third-most in program history and the 27 wins against Div. I opponents is the most all-time, far surpassing last year's record of 22.
The Falcons open play against UNLV today, May 25, at Santa Ana Star Field in Albuquerque, N.M. All games at the tournament will feature live video, stats and constant updates on various social media platforms. Follow all the action at: http://www.themw.com/page/championship_m-basebl.
