EUGENE, Ore. – Air Force senior Hannah Everson shattered her own Academy record during a third-place performance in the 10,000-meter run at the 2016 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships this evening (June 9), in Eugene, Oregon. Clocking a time of 32:47.25, Everson was the top American finisher and placed third in the overall field of 24.
Everson's third-place finish is the best by a member of the women's team since 2006.
The 10K kicked off under cold, rainy conditions at Historic Hayward Field. The 24 finalists ran the opening laps in a tightly bunched field, but slowly stretched out and moved into a single file formation after 10 laps. The main pack separated themselves from the rest of the field throughout the next several laps and Everson, who had remained within the top 10 during much of the race, was part of the eight-runner group that pulled away from the field with six laps remaining. As the runners jockeyed for position, Everson continued to move up the standings and, with a final sprint down the straightaway, she finished third in 32:47.25.
The recently-commissioned second lieutenant shattered her previous program record of 33:05.26, while improving her own Senior Class Record and posting the fourth-fastest time in conference history.
Everson, who became the program's first female runner to capture Division I All-America status during the cross country and indoor track seasons earlier this year, continued to make history this spring by becoming the first female to garner first-team status in a running event at the outdoor meet.
The Falcons conclude action at the NCAA Championships tomorrow night (June 10), when senior Patrick Corona competes in the finals of the 5000-meter run at 7:25 p.m. (PT).
