
Falcons suffer two heart-breaking losses at Princeton Invite

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – The Air Force water polo team lost a pair of games, both in sudden death overtime, on the second day of the Princeton Invitational, Saturday, Sept. 10, in Princeton, N.J. The Falcons, ranked 15th in the nation, fell to George Washington, 12-11, and to No. 14 Harvard, 13-12. The two losses dropped the Falcons to 1-4 overall this season.
In the first game, Air Force and George Washington traded goals throughout the first two quarters as GW led 7-5 at the half. Each team scored twice in the third quarter, but the Falcons scored two goals in the fourth to tie the game at 9-9. Falcon junior Riley Thomas scored with 1:35 left in the fourth for a10-9 Air Force lead. With one second left in regulation, Colonial Pierce Deamer tied the game. George Washington took a one-goal lead in the first overtime but the Falcons tied the game in the second overtime period on a goal by Garrett Fisk. In sudden death, Atakan Destici scored the game-winner to give the Colonials a 12-11 win. Fisk led the Falcons with four goals while Thomas had two goals, three assists and four steals.
In the second game of the day, Harvard opened up a 6-2 lead in the first half, but the Falcons battled back to tie the game late. Air Force outscored Harvard, 8-4, in the second half. Trailing 9-6 early in the fourth, the Falcons rallied with four straight goals to take a 10-9 lead late in the game. Jack Empey scored twice during the Falcon run. With four seconds left in the fourth, Harvard's Noah Harrison tied the game. Harrison gave the Crimson a one-goal lead in the first overtime, but Empey quickly tied the game. In the second overtime, Harrison scored again and Thomas answered for the Falcons to make the score 11-11. In sudden death, Harvard's Calin Chapallo scored the game-winner to give the Crimson a 12-11 victory.
Air Force's final game in the Princeton Invitational comes against St. Francis (N.Y.) on Sunday, Sept. 11, at 7:30 am ET.
