DENVER – UIW's Daniel Nevarez and Air Force's Jake Schenk have been named Western Athletic Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, for Sep. 5 – Sep. 11.
Schenk, a senior goalkeeper from Flemington, N.J. (Hunterdon Central), was perfect between the pipes on Friday night, making one save in a 6-0 win at home over Bryant. It was Schenk's second shutout in as many tries as the veteran cadet has yet to allow a goal this season.
Nevarez, a junior midfielder from Las Cruces, N.M. (Winfrey Academy), helped propel the Cardinals out of an early season slump, scoring a goal and assisting on two others in a big 5-2 win at Oral Roberts on Friday. He followed that up with two shots on goal in a 1-1 tie at Central Arkansas on Sunday.
Other offensive nominees: Air Force's Ryan Ward had a pair of assists on the weekend as the Falcons earned wins over Bryant and UC Riverside … Grand Canyon's Niki Jackson scored the game-winning goal in a neutral-site match with Missouri State on Friday … Utah Valley's Karson Payton scored a goal and assisted on another in Sunday's 3-0 win over Northern Illinois.
Other defensive nominees: UIW's Jorge Guzman made 10 total saves as the Cardinals won at Oral Roberts on Friday and played to a 1-1 tie at Central Arkansas on Sunday … Grand Canyon's Khadim Seye made the Grange and Ashwill All-Tournament Team as the Lopes split matches against Missouri State and host New Mexico … UT Rio Grande Valley's Leo Castillo made seven saves before allowing the winning goal in the second overtime of a 1-0 loss to Cal State Fullerton … Utah Valley's Giovanny Vazquez was named to the all-tournament team at the NIU Adidas Invitational.
