Albuquerque, N.M. - In the first match of the TLC Plumbing & Utility Invitational against Cal Poly, sophomore midfielder Tucker Bone found an opening from a cross in the 14th minute for the only goal of the game. The 1-0 victory over Cal Poly marks the Falcon's first win over the Mustangs since 2010. Air Force is now 1-1 heading into the second match of the tournament as Cal Poly drops to 0-3 on the season.
"We played a great first half and were able to get in behind them with quality chances," explained head coach Doug Hill. "Tucker Bone stuck with the ball and got the chance to put it away off the cross, he did a great job."
Eight Falcons logged shots on the match while four tallied shots on goal. Bone and A.J. Esparza took two shots apiece.
"It was good to be up, 1-0, at the half but in the second half we didn't play as well as I thought we could have," continued Hill. "We weren't getting the possessions we wanted so we have some work to do to get to a more consistent 90-minute game but I'm happy with the way the men grinded out and got it done."
Senior goalkeeper Jake Schenk finished with two saves and a shutout in his season debut in goal.
"Cal Poly is a great team; they competed in the NCAA playoffs last year, so we beat a really good team here in Albuquerque, we're pretty happy with the results," claimed Hill.
The Falcons return to the UNM Soccer Complex pitch against Cal State Northridge, Sunday, Sep. 4, at 2:00 p.m.
