Albuquerque, N.M. - Men's soccer fell, 1-2, in double-overtime in the second match of the TLC Plumbing & Utility Invitational against Cal State Northridge, Sept 4., in Albuquerque, N.M. The Falcons will open up their home slate next weekend with a 1-2 overall record. CSUN improves to 2-1.
In the sixth matchup between Air Force and CSUN, the teams found themselves in a defensive battle for the first period of play. It wasn't until midway through the second period that the Matadors Nicholas Grinde put the first point on the board in the 70th minute of action.
Undeterred, the Falcons rallied to a goal of their own in the 88th minute when team captain Cameron Duley sent a corner kick across the box to be met with Abinadi Samayoa's header for his second goal of the season. The junior forward Samayoa is the current team leader in goals (2) and points (4).
The Falcons and Matadors battled for the remainder of regulation and the first 10-minute overtime period with no goals. In the 101st minute Cal State's Richard Martinez found an opening to seal the deal at 2-1 in favor of the Matadors.
Sophomore midfielder Tucker Bone led the team with four shots while sophomore defender Klint Parker had two and Samayoa had two on goal. Air Force had eleven players log shots on the match while seven tallied shots on goal. The Falcons outshot the Matadors 16-13 on the match, including 10 shots to CSUN's two in the second period.
Junior goalkeeper John Wendt made four saves in six shots faced on the match.
The Falcons will open up their home slate with a "Pack the House" event against Bryant, Fri., Sept. 9, 7 p.m., at Cadet Soccer Stadium. On Sunday, Sept. 11, Air Force will continue action on the home pitch against UC Riverside at 1 p.m. There is free admission to all home matches.
