USAFA, Colo. - Six Falcons logged goals in the 6-0 shutout against Bryant in the home slate opener, Friday night, at Cadet Soccer Stadium. The last time Air Force put up six goals in a single match was against Buffalo in 2011. Air Force improves to 2-2 while Bryant drops to 0-4 on the season.
A handball by Bryant in the 20th minute yielded senior team captain Cameron Duley the chance to take the Falcons' first penalty kick of the season. Duley was able to get the goalie off the ball as he logged his first goal of the season. The match would remain close through the end of the first period as the teams entered the locker room at halftime, 1-0.
"The objective of our game was to keep their score at zero and we're pretty happy that is how it turned out," stated head coach Doug Hill. "We didn't start out as well as we could have in the first half but I'm happy with the way the guys responded and they showed a lot of character coming back."
In the second half the Falcons found their rhythm logging five unanswered goals. Tucker Bone logged his second goal of the season off of Austin Dewing's assist in the 55th minute. Two minutes later, Tucker Axhoj put the ball in the goal after a quick-touch assist from senior Ryan Ward.
The Falcons continued to fire on all cylinders as John Sims logged his first goal of the season from Axhoj's corner kick in the 63rd minute. Freshman Munear Aboussaud logged his first career goal from Austin Guerrero's assist in the 78th minute. Sophomore defender Jacob Yarnell headed in his first goal of the season from junior Jaric Marton's corner kick in the 83rd minute.
"We saw improvement," Hill explained. "The guys played really aggressive and were taking a lot of good shots and we got great results; the big takeaway from this match is the improvements."
Axhoj and Guerrero led the team in shots with three apiece. Air Force outshot Bryant, 10-1, in the second period. Senior goalkeeper Jake Schenk logged his second shutout in as many tries, making one save in three shots faced. Five Falcons tallied assists on the night while six Falcons logged goals.
Hill continued, "It was awesome to see the guys get those goals, we got enough guys minutes and we were happy to be able to rest some guys for the match on Sunday."
Air Force continues action at home against UC Riverside, Sunday, Sept. 11, at 1 p.m., at Cadet Soccer Stadium.
