FRESNO, Calif. - Air Force women's basketball dropped a 63-40 Mountain West contest at Fresno State (10-6, 3-2) Wednesday at Save Mart Center. Freshmen Kailin Davis and Mariah Forde led the Falcons by combining for 26 points.
Air Force fought back from a 14-point deficit in the second quarter, cutting Fresno State's lead to five, at 36-31, with six minutes to go in the third quarter. The Bulldogs closed the third quarter with a 7-0 run to go up 12 and put the game away with a 12-0 burst in the fourth.
Davis scored a game-high 15 points, setting a career-high with 33 minutes played in the start. Forde scored 11 points to go with two rebounds and three steals. Junior Dee Bennett had 10 rebounds for her fifth double-digit rebounding game of the season. Junior Cortney Porter led the Falcons with four assists. Freshman Kassady Huffman had six rebounds and a blocked shot.
Center Bego Faz Davalos led Fresno State with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Davalos also blocked three shots. Guard Candice White added 14 points to go with five assists.
The Falcons started slow, getting out-scored 20-8 in the first quarter. The Falcons responded with a strong second quarter, out-scoring the Bulldogs 16-10. Porter capped a 11-4 run by the Falcons by closing the half with a coast-to-coast layup as time expired.
"It was a much closer game than the final score indicated," Air Force head coach Chris Gobrecht said. "We just have to figure out a way to get the ball in the basket. It's going to be hard to beat anybody scoring just 40 points. I thought we did a good job defensively. Aside from them getting baskets off turnovers, I thought we played them well on the defensive side."
Air Force returns to action Saturday, Jan. 14, at San Jose State. Tip-off, at The SJSU Event Center, is 2 pm PT.
