Air Force opens spring season with three matches

This week: Air Force opens the 2017 spring season by hosting three matches this weekend. The Falcons take on North Colorado Friday, Jan. 21, at 6 p.m. The team plays twice Saturday, hosting Colorado State-Pueblo at 9 a.m. and Abilene Christian at 6 p.m. All three matches will be video streamed live on goairforcefalcons.com. There will also be free pizza and drinks at the afternoon/evening matches.
Home stand: Air Force plays its first seven matches at home this spring. Following this weekend, the Falcons return Jan. 28-29 for three more home matches. Following a match at Michigan State Feb. 17 and vs. Army West Point in East Lansing, Mich., Feb. 19, the team returns home for four more matches Feb. 24-25.
Last season: Air Force finished the season 7-18 overall. The Falcons were 2-5 in conference action and earned the sixth seed in the 2016 Mountain West Men's Tennis Championship, its best seed and record since 2005.
Fumagalli earns second All-American honor: Air Force senior tennis player Lucas Fumagalli was named to the 2016 Academic All-American Division I men's and women's at-large team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Fumagalli earned third-team honors for the second consecutive year.
Fumagalli is one of nine male student-athletes to earn multiple honors in this year's group of honorees. A native of New Braunfels, Texas, Fumagalli has a 3.81 grade point average and is majoring in mechanical engineering. He helped the Falcons to a sixth seed in the Mountain West championships, the highest for the Academy since 2005. Fumagalli was among the team leaders with 13 wins in singles and was third on the team with 15 doubles wins.
Fall numbers: Freshmen David Mottice and Mack Galvin, along with junior Max Olson, tied for the team lead with 10 singles wins in fall competition. Mottice and Olson were 10-5 in tournament play, while Galvin was 10-6. Senior Lucas Fumagalli posted a 9-6 mark. Mottice and sophomore Isaac Perez led the way in doubles, teaming up for a 9-5 mark.
Head Coach Dan Oosterhous: Dan Oosterhous is in his eighth season as the men's tennis coach at the Air Force Academy after being named the program's 12th head coach October 1, 2009. Oosterhous, a 1993 graduate of the Academy, replaced legendary head coach Rich Gugat, who retired after 36 years at the helm of the men's tennis program. Oosterhous, one of the best tennis players in program history, has a 71-94 career record. A native of Texarkana, Texas, He is a senior pilot with over 3,100 hours in the C-5, C-21, T-38, and T-37. He has three children, Emma (19), Anna (17) and Andrew (15).
