USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – Freshman Megan Irvine finished fifth in the pentathlon, as several members of the track and field team kicked off the 27th-annual Air Force Invitational this afternoon (Jan. 19) at the Academy's Cadet Field House. In her first collegiate pentathlon, Irvine tallied a pair of career-best marks and registered 3007 points to earn the fifth-place finish.
Her best finish of the day came in the final event, as Irvine used a late surge to place second in the 800-meter run (debut of 2:30.37). Irvine added a sixth-place mark in the shot put (career-best 30'2½"), while placing seventh in both the 60-meter hurdles (career-best 9.68) and high jump (4'9½"). The freshman rounded out her day with an eighth-place mark of 15'10¼" in the long jump – a distance just a quarter of an inch off of her personal best.
Five members of the men's team opened action in the heptathlon today. Junior Jake LaCoste, a newcomer to the Falcons' multi-event lineup, leads the group with a fourth-place tally of 2819 points, while classmate Calvin Berstler is just 14 points back in fifth (2805). Fellow junior Tyler Berson is in sixth (2572), while sophomore Walker Newell and freshman Trey Bell, competing in their first heptathlon competition, round out the group after the first day in seventh (2473) and eighth (2164), respectively.
With a winning time of 7.02 in his 60-meter dash debut, Newell paced Air Force to a one-two finish in that event, as Berstler took second in a career-best time 7.18. LaCoste picked up a pair of second-place marks during the first day of his first heptathlon, as he finished second in the shot put (career-best 40'1¼") and tied with Berstler for second in the high jump (6'4¼", career-best marks for both).
The heptathlon concludes tomorrow (Jan. 20), with the final three events beginning at 9:00 a.m. The rest of the Air Force Invitational gets underway at 1:00 p.m., with the men's weight throw and women's 5000-meter run.
