Air Force splits pair of matches in Nebraska

Air Force split a pair of non-conference matches Friday in Nebraska. The Falcons opened the day defeating Nebraska-Omaha, 5-2. Nebraska defeated Air Force, 6-1, Friday evening.
The Falcons opened the Omaha match by winning the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and 3 doubles. Elizabeth Barnickel and TJ Fumagalli beat Michelle Lo and Janelle Wilson, 6-3 while Lily Forlini and Nadeen Liberman beat Kenzie Hill and Hannah Hills, 6-2 at No. 3.
Air Force won four singles matches the clinch the victory. Barnickel defeated Janelle Wilson, 6-1, 7-5, at No. 2 singles, while Fumagalli was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Rylee Tucker at No. 3. Liberman was a winner at No. 5 over Kenzie Hill, 6-3, 6-1 while Jocelle Rudico beat Hannah Hills, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6.
Air Force's lone win in the Nebraska match came at No. 3 singles when Fumagalli defeated Lisa Andersson, 6-2, 6-2. Fumgalli and Barnickel teamed to win at No. 1 doubles, 6-1, over Mary Hanna and Andersson. Nebraska won the other two doubles matches to win the doubles point and won the remaining five singles matches.
Air Force improved to 3-3 overall this season. The Falcons are off next week before hosting their first home matches of the season Feb. 11-12. Air Force hosts Northern Colorado at 8 a.m. and Incarnate Word at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11, and Pacific on Sunday, Feb. 12, at 11:30 a.m.
"The team made improvements after their win this morning against Omaha," Air Force head coach Kim Gidley said. "I think we are finding the right combinations in doubles and now we just need to execute now. It was a strong win at no. 1 doubles with TJ and E. We had our chances at no. 2 doubles and just were not able to convert at the end. If we get a few more matches under our belt with these new combinations, we are headed in the right direction. TJ is doing a great job of getting on and off the court in singles. She just expects to compete."
