Air Force Downs Navy 3-2 In Extra Innings

// Box Score in PDF Air Force baseball (4-3) rallied to a 3-2 win in 10 innings over Navy (2-4) at the 2017 Freedom Classic Sunday afternoon at Historic Grainger Stadium in Kinston, NC. The Falcons escaped a pair of late bases loaded jams to come out with the win and take the series.Navy had the bases loaded in the eighth and ninth innings but failed to score a run. The Midshipmen had the bases loaded with no outs in the eighth and the bases loaded with one out in the ninth. The Falcons, and reliever Nathan Stanford, escaped both by inducing clutch inning-ending double plays.Air Force won the game in the tenth inning on an infield single by Justin Graham, scoring pinch runner Russell Williams from third. The inning started with a single by catcher Rob Dau and a double by Daniel Jones to put runners on at second and third. Williams came into the game to run for Dau and Graham came in as a pinch hitter, delivering the walk-off hit.The Falcons rallied back from an early deficit for the second day in a row. Navy scored two runs in the first to lead early. The Falcons scored a run in the bottom of the first and tied it up with a run in the sixth.Air Force's bullpen did not allow a run in six innings works. Falcon reliever Ethan Nichols (1-0) picked up the win with a scoreless 10th inning. Stanford logged two scoreless innings and sophomore Tyler Mortenson had three scoreless innings of relief. Starting pitcher Matt Hargreaves settled down after the first inning, not allowing a run over the next three.The Falcons had seven hits in the game. Bradley Haslam added a double and Adam Groesbeck, Nic Ready and Shaun Mize added base hits.Navy reliever Jeff Meenach (0-1) took the loss. Starting pitcher George Coughlin pitched nine innings for the Midshipmen, striking out four.Navy had eight hits. Shortstop Travis Blue led the way, going 3-for-4 with a run scored."What a great battle between the Academies today," Air Force head coach Mike Kazlausky said. "We showed true resiliency to get through pressure packed situations, escaping two bases loaded jams late. We executed when it counted in the 10th, with clutch hitting by Rob Dau, Daniel Jones and Justin Graham."Air Force returns to action next weekend, March 3-5, opening Mountain West play with a three-game series hosting New Mexico.
