TEMPE, Ariz. – Highlighted by a pair of first-place finishes and three additions to the Academy record book, the Air Force track and field team opened the outdoor season this evening (March 17) during the first night of action at the Baldy Castillo Classic in Tempe.
Junior John Reynolds, who missed the indoor season while recovering from an injury, marked his return to the lineup by becoming just the fourth athlete in program history to surpass the 50-foot barrier in the triple jump. Registering a distance of 51'1" – the second-best mark in Academy history – Reynolds won the triple jump by more than two feet and broke a Junior Class Record that had stood since 1998.
Senior Matt Dorsey also earned an event title under the lights of Sun Angel Stadium, as he clocked a time of 3:46.50 to finish first out of 46 runners in the 1500-meter run.
Following an event debut of 5:59.31, sophomore Trevor Siniscalchi finished within the top half of the field in the 2000-meter steeplechase (fourth). Junior Chip White placed seventh in his first 400-meter hurdles of the season (53.32), while the Falcons added top-15 finishes from seniors Jason Engel, Zach Johnson and Reed McGuire. Engel clocked a time of 3:52.23 to take 13th in the 1500-meter run, while Johnson and McGuire earned that same placement in the 200-meter dash (21.31) and hammer throw (177'7¼"), respectively.
On the women's side, junior Carina Gillespie paced the Falcons with a fourth-place finish in the 1500-meter run (4:29.14). Air Force received additional top-10 finishes from sophomore Kaliyah Gorman and freshman Lindsey Blanks, as Gorman clocked a time of 1:04.19 to take eighth in the 400-meter hurdles and Blanks earned the same finish in the 2000-meter steeplechase after posting a program-best time of 7:12.05 in the non-traditional distance.
The women also saw freshman Megan Irvine clocked the eighth-fastest 200-meter time in program history (25.39) during the first outdoor meet of her collegiate career.
Air Force concludes action at the Baldy Castillo Classic tomorrow (March 18), while the rest of the squad travels to Boulder, Colo., for the Jerry Quiller Classic.
