
Air Force Trio Opens Action at California Invitational

AZUSA, Calif. – Three decathletes from the Air Force track and field team opened competition at the California Invitational today (April 12) on the campus of Azusa Pacific University.
Collecting 3593 points through the first five events, junior Calvin Berstler is currently fifth in the 19-competitor "B" section – and just 23 points out of second. Berstler's total, his best first-day output at the California Invitational, included a runner-up finish in the high jump (6'4") and trio-leading marks in the long jump (ninth, 21'0½"), shot put (eighth, 37'5¼") and 400-meter dash (fourth, 50.18). The junior rounded out his day with a fourth-place time of 11.28 in the 100-meter dash.
Junior Tyler Berson and sophomore Walker Newell are ranked 10th and 12th, respectively, after the first day of action. Berson tallied 3358 points during the five opening events, while Newell amassed 3232 points in his first collegiate decathlon.
Berson earned a top-five finish in 400-meter dash (fifth, 50.24), after recording marks in the 100-meter dash (ninth, 11.38), long jump (12th, 20'6¼"), shot put (10th, career-best 36'4") and high jump (13th, season-best 5'8¾"). Newell, who kicked off his decathlon opener with a victory in the 100-meter dash (career-best 10.98), made his outdoor debut in the long jump (15th, 20'0¼"), shot put (16th, 32'6½"), high jump (16th, 5'6½") and 400-meter dash (seventh, 51.60).
The Falcons' combined event athletes conclude action at the California Invitational tomorrow (April 13), while two members of the Air Force distance squad begin competition at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays.
