
Falcon Lacrosse Drops Conference Game on the Road

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Air Force came up short against Furman, 8-7, in Southern Conference action on the road, Saturday afternoon at Paladin Stadium, Greenville, NC. The Falcons, now 7-5 with a 3-1 mark in the conference, were dealt their first SoCon loss since joining the league last season.
Air Force got off to a hot start, outscoring Furman, 4-2, in the first period. Cameron Carter assisted Austin Smith in Air Force's first goal at the 9:39 mark. Jack Flynn went on to notch the next two goals for the Falcons. His first was unassisted, while Nick Hruby provided the assist for his second in a man-up opportunity at the 3:39 mark. Falcon defenseman Brandon Jones registered his first goal of the season with a long-stick trebuchet shot into the back Furman's net.
Furman's Lou Yovino tallied the Paladins' first two goals of the game. Trent Harper went perfect in first-period face-offs, winning seven-for-seven.
Furman owned the second period, holding the 2016 conference champions to no points while adding four goals of their own. Yovino tallied two more goals in the onslaught; registering four goals before the end of the first half.
The Falcons rallied back as Grant Gould had the hot hand in the third period, netting two goals to bring the Falcons to a 6-6 tie at the close of the period. Both of Gould's goals came in unassisted attacks on the Paladins' cage. Gould has 17 goals this season.
Furman struck first in the final period of play, netting two goals in the first three minutes of the period. The Paladins' recaptured the lead, 7-6, at the 13:41 mark and extended to 8-6 at the 12:21 mark. Carter netted a goal with just over six minutes remaining in regulation play, bringing the Falcons to within one point of a tying score. Air Force was unable to punch in the equalizer, dropping the match, 8-7.
At the final whistle, Air Force held the advantage in shots (27-22), ground balls (23-17) and face-off wins (14-of-19), but had five more turnovers than the Paladins. Harper finished his day at the face-off X with a .737 face-off winning-percentage. Joe Matarazzo, Sean LaVine and Jones, the team's caused turnover leaders, tallied a caused turnover apiece on the match. Jones picked up a season-high 10 ground balls.
Next weekend, Air Force travels to Lexington, Va., to compete in the road-slate finale against VMI in conference play, Sat., Apr. 15, at noon ET. The Falcons and Keydets will be meeting for the 14th time in program history; Air Force leads the 13-game series, 12-1. When playing in Virginia, Air Force is 4-1
