EUGENE, Ore. -- Junior Shelley Spires wrapped up the 2017 collegiate season for the Air Force track and field team this afternoon (June 10), as she finished 12th in the high jump at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
Spires easily cleared the opening bar of 5'8" on her first attempt, before making the 5'10" bar on her second chance. She moved into All-America contention with a third-attempt clearance at 5'11½", but exited the competition after three misses at 6'0¾" -- a height that took out eight of the final 13 competitors. Tying for 12th with Florida International's Carissa Cutliff, the junior finished within the top half of the national final for the second time this season.
Air Force sent a program-record 10 Falcons to Historic Hayward Field for this year's national meet.
