Wickard, who joins the Academy from TCU, will oversee Air Force's sprints and hurdles squad.
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – The Air Force track and field team completed its coaching staff today (Oct. 15), as head coach Ralph Lindeman introduced Justin Wickard as an assistant coach for the program's sprints and hurdles squad.
"We're really fortunate to get a coach with Justin's background and expertise," Lindeman said. "For the past five years he's been an assistant coach for the sprints and hurdles at TCU, a program with a highly-successful sprint tradition. He comes highly recommended by Darryl Anderson (TCU head coach) and Wes Kittley (Texas Tech head coach), both of whom I have great respect for, and, as a graduate of Utah State, Justin has a knowledge of our competition in the Mountain West."
Wickard comes to the Academy after spending five seasons at TCU, where he worked alongside head coach Darryl Anderson in the sprints. In his final season with the Horned Frogs, Wickard helped guide the men's 4x400-meter relay to an indoor time of 3:04.25 that broke a 34-year-old school record, and saw Derrick Mokaleng break the outdoor school record in the 400-meter dash with a time of 45.02. During his tenure in Fort Worth, he also had the opportunity to help coach Ronnie Baker, who was the top 100-meter sprinter in the world at one point during the 2018 season.
"I am very excited to be part of the Air Force Academy and work with such an amazing staff," Wickard said. "I want to thank Ralph Lindeman and Jim Trego for giving me the opportunity to serve the cadets here at the Academy and to be able to help the program continue to win championships and build future leaders for our country. The mission statement, values and integrity here at the Air Force Academy are amazing and the way Ralph leads is something I highly value as a coach."
Prior to joining the TCU staff, Wickard served on the coaching staffs at Louisiana Tech, North Carolina, Chadron State and Texas Tech, overseeing the development of 11 All-Americans and numerous conference champions. He also helped the Lady Techsters to a pair of WAC team titles in 2013.
Wickard is a 2006 graduate of Utah State, where he was a three-time West Region qualifier in the 100-meter hurdles and also advanced to the NCAA Championships in that event. In addition, he competed at in the 60-meter hurdles at the 2006 USA Indoor Championships.
"We did an exhaustive and thorough search to get the right coach for this position," Lindeman added. "As impressed as I was with Justin's technical knowledge and expertise, we believe he will be a great 'fit' for the Air Force Academy, and that's more important than any skillset."
